Why use mineral oil in a freshly built engine?

When an engine is freshly rebuilt, the piston rings and cylinder walls need to bed-in (seat properly). This process creates the correct seal between the piston rings and the cylinder bore, ensuring good compression and preventing oil consumption.

• Mineral oil (like Valvoline™ Premium Mono 30) has fewer friction modifiers compared to synthetics. This means it allows just the right amount of controlled friction so the rings can wear-in against the cylinder walls.

• Synthetic oils are “too slippery” for break-in — they can prevent the rings from bedding properly, leading to poor compression, oil blow-by, and long-term performance issues.

• Mineral break-in oil also helps carry away machining debris and contaminants that may be left after assembly.

• After proper bedding-in (usually the first few hundred to 1,000 km depending on engine type), the oil is drained and replaced with the long-term lubricant (semi-synthetic, or full synthetic, depending on application).

Mineral oil is recommended for fresh engine builds because it promotes correct piston ring seating, ensures proper break-in, and avoids the risks of glazing the cylinders that can happen with synthetic oils too early.
